First workshops for Swansea carers centre

The first workshops for Swansea Carers Centre took place in Swansea Environment Centre. The workshops were held once a week from the 7th of November to the 12th December 2023. The workshops focussed on personal creativity and for the last session everyone contributed to a collaborative art work which was donated to the carers centre at the end of the course.

The first Art of Dreaming Workshops

The first workshops were held in a local church hall with three participants who had all been carers. We met once a week for six weeks from June 14th- 23rd August 2023 to share and create art from our dreams. The participants created some wonderful art work and we are still in touch and hoping to have a reunion this year in October . The workshops were evaluated based on the five ways to wellbeing and the results were really positive.

The Aims of the Art of Dreaming workshops

The Art of Dreaming workshops aim to support others to explore their own sense of creativity and self- expression through the Five Ways to Wellbeing: connection, being active, taking notice, learning, and sharing.

As the workshops are not “conventional” art classes, the focus being on the process, not the result. This allows participants creativity to unfold naturally and provides opportunities for personal discovery. No experience is needed to take part.

The workshops provide opportunities to learn something new through providing a variety of art materials and trying different techniques.

The workshops offer the opportunity for people to gain confidence in their own creative process with the support of a caring and empathic art practitioner.

The workshops also offer the opportunity for contribution and social connection

The workshop aim to foster a sense of relaxation with the aim to reduce stress through providing a conducive and supportive environment for

participants.

Dreaming and Connection

When people lived in small hunting and gathering groups, sharing dreams was common practice. It was a way people could empathise with the feelings of others and had a stabilising effect on the community with other creative activities such as singing, dancing and telling stories (Wax, 2004). We might still share dreams with people that are close to us but creativity gives us the opportunity to connect with others through dreaming which although is very personal to the individual is also something universal.

The Dream Horse

I realised the connection between dreaming and art after having a dream about a horse. A black horse was standing outside my front door. Its body was huge but it had a tiny head. It was silent but somehow I knew it wanted to come in. I let it in and it went straight to the back of the house and lay down. Although the horse seemed content, its body was so big it filled half the house and I was worried how I was going to look after it.

When I woke up the image of the horse was so strong I felt compelled to paint it and that experience was transformative. The image of the horse was no longer just a fleeting dream image, through creativity it became tangible and took on a validity of its own in the physical world. Dreams could be recorded through creativity not just writing them down.
